Ways to Make Your Home Feel Like a Sanctuary

During these stressful times of the COVID-19 crisis, everyone is spending more time inside at home.  If you are like most of the world, you may feel like the walls are starting to close in as you crave some normalcy back in your everyday life.

Here are some of our favorite tips for making your home feel more like a sanctuary rather than a prison cell.

Freshly made bed with throw pillows and trayMake your bed every day.

It might not seem like a big deal, especially if you live alone, but getting into a freshly made bed every evening is like your upcoming sleep giving you a hug.  It’s even better if you make your bed when you first get up, so every time you walk in your bedroom you don’t see the messy covers.

Limit how much you watch the news.

We all know the saying that knowledge is power, but watching the COVID-19 coverage all day, every day will surely leave you feeling more stressed out.  Pick just one or two times a day to watch the news, and that’s it.  Whether you choose to watch the state or federal government press briefings, the 6:00 local news or a combination, be sure to set your limits.

Clean your kitchen sink each night before you go to bed.

Ok, ok, you don’t have to scrub your sink each night, but be sure to put any dirty dishes in the dishwasher or clean the pans from dinner before heading up to bed.  Bonus points if you wipe down/dry the sink with a paper towel.  There is nothing worse than coming into your kitchen to get your morning cup of joe, only to find a full sink from the previous day.

We all have that one room or area of the house we’ve been meaning to declutter and purge.

With the regular commitments that eat at your free time likely on hold, now is the time to seize the day.  If it’s a whole room that you want to tackle, break the task down into small parts and focus on just one area for 20 minutes each day for a week.  You’ll be surprised and what you can accomplish in just a few short days and how much better that space will make you feel.

Bring the outside indoors.

Whether you are partial to green plants or prefer fresh flowers, having some of springtime’s garden treats to can do wonders to calm us.

Redecorate.

We’re not talking about a full-on room make over, but just a few simple switches will amaze you.  Maybe it’s just switching the throw pillows on your couch and bed.  Or, try changing the locations of your favorite framed photos for a new look.  If you have some extra paint in your garage, why not spruce up a wall or two (or fix the nicks that have happened over time from everyday living).

Limit use of technology or screen time before you go to sleep.

We all know this is paramount for children and teenagers, but how many of us adhere to this ourselves?  As hard as it may be for you to unplug, try it for a few nights.  We’ll bet you will feel much more refreshed when you wake up each morning.

Find what soothes you and work that into your evening routine.

Maybe it’s a favorite candle that you light while making dinner to bring you back to a favorite memory or time. Maybe it’s a song that brightens your mood or helps you unwind, or wrapping in a cozy blanket on the couch while drinking herbal tea. Everyone has something that they find soothing.  Whatever it is for you, bring that into your daily life – especially during these trying times.

Keep your home clean.

We believe a clean home is a healthier home and during these times, keeping your home clean is crucial to your and your family’s health. Spend some time each day cleaning and disinfecting those high touch areas in your home such as door knobs, light switches, appliance handles, etc.
